Municipal Asset Management Planning

Do you own a home, a cottage, or a vehicle? How about furniture, electronics, clothing and other stuff! Those are all personal assets – they have value and it’s important to look after and protect those assets, otherwise they lose their value, or become useless.

This "Week in Review" show focuses on how local governments manage municipal assets,  Asset Management is a complex matter for municipalities, as they not only must comply with provincial rules and regulations, they need the resources to meet those requirements.  Furthermore, proposed new legislation is on the horizon with potentially huge impacts for small townships and municipalities.  Gritt Koehl's guest on the show is Arryn McNicholl, Municipal Treasurer for Alnwick/Haldimand.

September 8, 2017 Northumberland 89.7 Week In Review / Interview with Brighton Councillor John Martinello

The Municipality of Brighton Council has come under the scrutiny of the Ontario Ombudsman.  In a report dated August 2017, the Ombudsman indicated that Brighton Council had contravened the Municipal Act in March 2017. Furthermore, the Municipality finds itself in an awkward position as defendant in an OMB appeal launched by 952849 Ontario Ltd (the developer of Lakeside Landing Subdivision) which just happens to be owned by Brighton Mayor Mark Walas.

August 18, 2017 Northumberland 89.7 Week In Review / Interview with Deputy-Mayor Sandra Arthur and Dave Hughes

Accountability, transparency and openness are vital components in a democracy for citizens/taxpayers to develop trust and confidence in their local Councils and Municipal Governments. Some Councils within Northumberland County do have press and public question periods at meetings – some do not. During this Week in Review show, Gritt Koehl interviews Deputy-Mayor Sandra Arthur following an attempt to “muzzle” her concerns, which she brought forward to the Cramahe Township Auditors - Collins, Barrow.

Following that interview David Hughes, author/host of Straightspeak, discusses how people in power ignore citizen’s rights in attempts to build a barrier against Transparency and Accountability.

July 28, 2017 Northumberland 89.7 Week In Review / Citizens Question Cramahe Spending Priorities

With the recent announcement of provincial and federal funding to study the extension of the gravity sewer system beyond the boundaries of the Village of Colborne, local residents Alex Saunders and Judy Fujioka-Read are questioning why taxpayer dollars are being spent on costly projects that have not been proven to be justified. Is Cramahe Township ignoring current issues facing taxpayers while pursuing a “field of dreams”?  In this episode of "Week in Review" Gritt Koehl interviews Alex and Judy to get their perspective on the priorities and decisions of Cramahe Council.

July 7, 2017 Northumberland 89.7 Week In Review / What Happens When Your World Crumbles?

Special "Week In Review" exposes the harsh realities people had to face, when evacuated from their homes on June 9th, with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

Tracy Grealy who had only lived in the building at 29 King Street in Colborne for one month shares her riveting story in an 11 minute interview with Gritt Koehl.

Stephanie Mitchell and Tony Hicks recount their ordeal of being evacuated with two children, ages 1-1/2 and 11. The family had lived in the building for 2 years. Their 27 minute interview highlights the refusal of the building Owner "Hari" to spend money to properly maintain the building, and the ongoing neglect of the building over the years.

David Alexander, Family & Community Services Director for the Salvation Army speaks to the support services provided to the tenants. A special thank you to David for his efforts to find temporary housing for those tenants who desperately needed that help.

May 26, 2017 Northumberland 89.7 Week In Review - Interview With Bryan Lambert

Retired Chartered Accountant Bryan Lambert had no idea he was about to open a "hornet's nest" by asking Cobourg's Chief Finance Director Ian Davey a simple question: "What's going on in Cramahe?" The attempt to get an answer has led to a firestorm of allegations and counter allegations between Cramahe Mayor Marc Coombs and Deputy Mayor Sandra Arthur. In an effort to get to the bottom of the controversy Gritt Koehl interviews Bryan Lambert.

May 5, 2017 Northumberland 89.7 FM Radio Week in Review - Interview with Brighton Councillor John Martinello

Jim Glover and Gritt Koehl catch up on Cramahe Council news including a letter from the Township's financial auditors.

The interview with Brighton Councillor John Martinello focuses on issues with a sewer system that the developer/owner wants to use for the proposed Lakeside Landing subdivision (Brighton). Staff and council are in favour of a gravity sewer system and do not support the system proposed by the developer. Martinello talks about being between a rock and a hard place, given that the developer/owner is Brighton Mayor Mark Walas.

April 21, 2017 Northumberland 89.7 FM Radio Week in Review - Interview with Brighton Councillor Brian Ostrander

Jim Glover and Gritt Koehl discuss issues around social media, municipal leadership, communications, transparency and elections.

The interview with Councillor Ostrander focuses on several of these issues raised in a letter by Ostrander to Mayor Mark Walas. Lack of communication is causing frustration to build among Councillors. Be sure to listen to the podcast as it is frank and to the point.

Mayor Walas was contacted by Jim Glover the day before, letting Mayor Walas know that this interview was being aired on the 21st, and giving him an opportunity to weigh in on the discussion. As of this posting, Mayor Walas has not responded.

September 30, 2016 Northumberland 89.7FM Radio Week in Review

Live interview on Friday's Week in Review show with John Hill, Jim Glover and Gritt Koehl highlighting the safety and infrastructure issues along the railway corridor in the Township of Cramahe. One point that needs to be made clearer is the maximum speed of trains allowed on a Class 5 Track, which the two CN tracks that run through Cramahe are designated as. Class 5 tracks allow freight trains to travel up to 129 km/hr and passenger trains can travel up to 145 km/h.
